/ˈkæθrən/ (say 'kathruhn)

1. a town in northern central NT, on the Katherine River.
2. a river in the NT, rising in south-western Arnhem Land and flowing south-west to the Daly River; flows through the steep cliffs of the Katherine Gorge.
{def. 2 named by JM Stuart in 1862 after the daughter of James Chambers, a South Australian pastoralist who helped sponsor an expedition}
Explorer John McDouall Stuart crossed this region, traditionally inhabited by the Jawoyn people, in 1862. The township of Katherine developed following the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line across the Katherine River in 1871 and the establishment in 1876 of Springvale station (the homestead still stands). The railway was extended here from Pine Creek in 1917. An abattoir and meatworks were built in 1963, burned out in 1969, and rebuilt. Beef cattle is the region's main industry, with some tropical fruit also grown. Katherine also benefits from tourism to the nearby Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), and from the Tindal RAAF base to the east of the town.
